Ms. Lucero Joins Hands-On Geoscience Workshop

Physics and Geoscience teacher Ms. Joanna Lucero joined a group of five teachers from across the country for a week in Arizona to gain hands-on experience in geoscience through the NSF-funded MUSICA project. With curriculum guidance from Carnegie Academy for Science Education, the group learned firsthand how to conduct research from geological fieldwork through laboratory analysis and scientific interpretation.

Ms. Lucero worked alongside MUSICA scientists and will use what was learned during the workshop to create a series of bi-lingual and standards-aligned lesson plans related to the MUSICA project in Colombia, South America, this upcoming school year.

Lucero shared that she “joined the MUSICA program to expand her understanding of geoscience and research methods so that she could bring real-world experiences to her students.” Adding that, “Geoscientists provide the best teacher PD experiences!”
