Reach for the Stars Ann Richards Legacy Award Profile: Beverly Dale

Why did you choose to serve as Ann Richards Legacy Award Sponsor this year?

I chose to sponsor the Ann Richards Legacy Award this year because the recipient, Jeanne Goka, taught me why the leadership of the principal in ANY school/ALL schools is critical to success and growth – for both faculty and students. I was new to the field of education when I engaged with the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. I am now a firm believer in promoting and mentoring leadership in education, and I am so happy to be working with another great educator, Kris Waugh, who will take our school and our girls to another level.

What do you enjoy most about Reach for the Stars?

Simple answer – our girls/Ann’s girls!

What would you like to say to the graduating class of 2018?

I have two messages – one from me, and one from our dear Ann Richards herself:

The message from me is one of your words, RESILIENCE. I love this definition from www.psychologytoday.com,

“Resilience is that ineffable quality that allows some people to be knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever. Rather than letting failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes….Even after misfortune, resilient people are blessed with such an outlook they are able to change course and soldier on.” So, ladies, simply, PERSIST!

The message from Ann comes from a sign I saw this past March 24th on the streets of Austin during the “March for Life.” Someone in front of me had a big sign with a beautiful picture of our dear Ann with the following quote:

“I want to urge you to make waves. I want to urge you to rock the boat I want to urge you to get off your duff. I want you to speak out at whatever cost if it comes from your heart. You’re going to build this country in which my six grandchildren will grow up. And when you see what you have done, I hope you are proud of it.”

I’m not sure when the Governor said this, but it is even a more important message now than it was then. So, ladies, ROCK THE BOAT!

I love you. I’m proud of you! Holler if you need me!
