6th-Grade Stars Deliver Animal Enrichment Devices to Austin Zoo

Each year, our Star 6th graders work on a meaningful community project to design and build animal enrichment devices for the rescue animals at the Austin Zoo. Students combine research, creativity, and hands-on problem-solving to support the zookeepers during feeding time and provide much-needed stimulation for the animals.

The project begins with observation and research. Our Stars visit the Austin Zoo to study animal behavior and needs, then sketch thoughtful designs aimed at encouraging movement, curiosity, and engagement. In the MakerSpace, Stars bring their ideas to life through building prototypes, testing materials, making adjustments, and collaborating with their peers. Using technology and power tools, they gain practical building skills while learning the value of teamwork.

The final and most exciting step is delivery day. Students visit the Austin Zoo to see their enrichment devices in action and observe how the animals interact with their creations. Watching a bear or mountain lion engage successfully with a device they designed is both rewarding and instructive. Students reflect on what worked, what could be improved, and how design thinking plays a role in real-world problem-solving.

This impactful learning experience is made possible through the generous support of the Ann Richards School Foundation. Foundation funding ensures students have access to the MakerSpace tools, materials, transportation, and instructional resources needed to bring projects like this to life. By investing in hands-on, project-based STEM initiatives, the Foundation reinforces the innovative curriculum students begin in 6th grade and continue building on throughout their time at Ann Richards.

The Austin Zoo partnership guides 6th graders into the project-based, Maker-centered learning model that defines the curriculum at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. As the only 6th–12th grade school in Austin ISD where STEM programming is for every student, the Ann Richards School empowers young women to collaborate, create, and communicate with confidence. Through projects like this one, our Stars begin their journey toward becoming tomorrow’s STEM leaders.
