Leadership Program
As the name indicates, the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders incorporates an effective leadership development program for our students. Leadership training is integral to the curriculum, a key component of after-school programming, and incorporated in summer enrichment and internship opportunities. Specifically, young women at the Ann Richards School develop leadership skills through the following avenues:
Course Curriculum: Every Ann Richards student enrolls in a specially designed course, STARS, that includes leadership development training. In collaboration with experts in the area of leadership, the material covered each year is be age and developmentally appropriate.
Service Learning and School Leadership: Leadership development is rooted in creating strong ties to the community and giving back to improve the community. At the Ann Richards School, students identify, lead, and implement service projects at the school and within the community. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in school governance organizations such as student council and other student-led groups.
After-school Programs: The Ann Richards School curriculum is strengthened by numerous partnerships with community-based organizations that extend the school day for our students. Partnerships with organizations such as GenAustin, Girl Scouts, and Girlstart support the students in developing the confidence and self-esteem necessary to become the next generation of leaders.
Summer Enrichment: Key to the success of our students is the opportunity to participate in summer programs that are selected each year. At the Ann Richards School, we will expand the horizons of our students by offering opportunities to connect with girls from other communities and visit places never before imagined.
Career Fair & Speaker Series: Students at the Ann Richards School have the opportunity to hear first-hand from female leaders within a variety of careers and disciplines. This series is designed to inspire girls to dream big and recognize their own potential as future community leaders.
Throughout her adult life, Ann Richards dedicated herself to developing young women leaders. She helped found the Texas Foundation for Women's Resources, which supports Leadership Texas and Power Pipeline, both programs focused on training women leaders. Governor Richards mentored women throughout her career and encouraged women everywhere to take on leadership roles in their communities. The Ann Richards School continues the work that Ann Richards started during her career as a public servant by preparing students for a lifetime of leadership.
