Academics
The Ann Richards School offers a challenging and innovative interdisciplinary curriculum to meet the needs of 21st-century leaders. Our curriculum embraces multiple learning styles and is designed to prepare all students for college by teaching them how to think creatively, analyze problems, and develop solutions. Experiential education is a key component of the curriculum — students will be engaged in making discoveries and experimenting with knowledge rather than hearing or reading about the experiences of others. The curriculum is comprised of the following:
Pre-Advanced Placement (AP) Core Classes: These courses integrate all recommended learning standards of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and are intended to prepare students for AP courses and college. Course topics include English, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. See more information about the AP curriculum at Laying the Foundation, the AP curriculum used by Austin Independent School District.
STARS Exploratory: Success Through Academics, Responsibility, and Service (STARS)is a specially designed course for Ann Richards students that covers four major themes: Wellness and Fitness; Women and Gender Issues; College Awareness and Study Skills; and Leadership and Service Learning. Each grade level builds on recurring themes with age-appropriate materials and subtopics.
STEM Exploratory: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This coursework covers Applied Science, Applied Mathematics, Architecture, Engineering, Computer Science, and Robotics.
Liberal Arts Exploratory: Writing, Social Science, and Literature. Courses will be taught in journalism, filmmaking, women in literature, playwriting, and debate.
Foreign Language Study: Students have the opportunity to pursue foreign language study in French or Spanish.
Fine Arts Study: Students study Visual Art, Theater, Band, Orchestra, and Choir.
The coursework is designed to help our students make real-world, relevant connections through school assignments. The curriculum is enhanced with field trips, summer programs, student-led organizations, and competitions, as well as college tours and visits. Our students will graduate from the Ann Richards School with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college and pursue the careers of their choice.
